Month: March 2021

Since Holy Lent is a season of giving alms, and even though I don’t like begging, I thought this would be an appropriate time to beg for alms. So many of you have already given, and I appreciate it greatly. God will surely reward you!

Priests who retire receive a pension of course, but frankly, it is not much, but another source of income for retired priests like myself, is Mass stipends and weekend coverage for priests who are away. Given my health limitations, I am not able to take Mass stipends or provide coverage. This income would amount to roughly $800 a month, which goes a long way.

In order to make up for this lost income, I come to you asking for alms. What would be helpful the most is recurring donations. If 80 people donated only $10 a month this would cover what is missing because I cannot offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

So, my brothers and sisters in Christ, consider giving alms. In my priestly ministry I had a saying around the time of the annual diocesan appeal. I told my parishioners “I will not subject you to countless announcements, emails, or letters IF we meet our goal quickly.” I was blessed with generous parishioners wherever I was assigned, and rarely did I have to hound them for money. I hope the same is true here.

80 people giving $10 or more a month can do immense good. Prayerfully consider helping. You will, whether you choose to give or not, have my prayers.

The following comes from the first reading of the Novus Ordo Mass for today. I couldn’t help but have a sense of foreboding when I read it. It seems as though it was written for this very moment in the history of salvation. It is, I believe, a warning to us.

We have to admit that we are living in extraordinarily evil times both in the Church and in the world. To fail to notice and understand the dire situation is to be lost. So, dear children, wake up! Repent! For the Kingdom of God is at hand! Go to confession, pray the Rosary every day, consecrate yourself and your family to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and pray to St. Joseph, Terror of Demons.

If we do not heed the message of this lent and the message of this reading, we run the risk of history repeating itself. So, my spiritual children, take this scripture to prayer, read it in light of our present world. Then act. Repent! Confess! Stay in the state of grace! And most importantly, have no fear whatsoever.

All the leading priests and the people likewise were exceedingly unfaithful, following all the abominations of the nations; and they polluted the house of the Lord which he had hallowed in Jerusalem.

The Lord, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place; but they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words, and scoffing at his prophets, till the wrath of the Lord rose against his people, till there was no remedy.

Therefore, he brought up against them the king of the Chaldeans, who slew their young men with the sword in the house of their sanctuary, and had no compassion on young man or virgin, old man or aged; he gave them all into his hand. And all the vessels of the house of God, great and small, and the treasures of the house of the Lord, and the treasures of the king and of his princes, all these he brought to Babylon. And they burned the house of God, and broke down the wall of Jerusalem, and burned all its palaces with fire, and destroyed all its precious vessels. He took into exile in Babylon those who had escaped from the sword, and they became servants to him and to his sons until the establishment of the kingdom of Persia. ~ 2 Chronicles 36:14-20

Today begins the Novena to St. Joseph, leading up to his feast day on March 19th. I firmly suggest that all of us pray this Novena with great devotion and fervor. After all, it is in preparation for the feast day, in the month of, in the Year of St. Joseph. I have no doubt that graces upon graces will flow upon souls who make this Novena.

We have great need of St. Joseph in our day. He is powerful against all that threatens the souls of so many: attacks on the family, attacks on the Church, both from within and without, attacks on freedom, attacks on children through their exploitation in sex trafficking, attacks on the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony through the normalization of homosexuality, and attacks on purity through pornography. Yes, more than ever we need a man like St. Joseph to protect and defend us from all the wiles of our enemies.

So, let us all join together in praying this Novena that St. Joseph, Terror of Demons would crush the enemies of God underfoot, and obtain for us many graces from the pierced Heart of Jesus, his son. I suggest we use these prayers:

Prayer of the Holy Cloak Novena
O Glorious Patriarch St. Joseph, you who were chosen by God above all men to be the earthly head of the most holy of families, I beseech you to accept me within the folds of your holy cloak, that you may become the guardian and custodian of my soul. From this moment on, I choose you as my father, my protector, my counselor, my patron, and I beseech you to place in your custody my body, my soul, all that I am, all that I possess, my life, and my death. Look upon me as one of your children; defend me from the treachery of my enemies, invisible or otherwise, assist me at all times in all my necessities; console me in the bitterness of my life, and especially at the hour of my death. Say but one word for me to the Divine Redeemer whom you were deemed worthy to hold in your arms, and to the Blessed Virgin Mary, your most chaste spouse. Request for me those blessings which will lead me to salvation. Include me amongst those who are most dear to you and I shall set forth to prove myself worthy of your special patronage. Amen.

Prayer to St. Joseph, Terror of Demons
Saint Joseph, Terror of Demons, cast thy solemn gaze upon the devil and all his minions, and protect us with thy mighty staff. Thou didst flee through the night to avoid the devil’s wicked designs; now with the power of God, smite the demons as they flee from thee! Grant special protection, we pray, for children, priests, fathers, families, and the dying. By God’s grace, no demon dares approach while thou art near, so we beg of thee, always be near to us! Amen.

Please share this post, so as many people as possible can pray this Novena.
